Be aware of email phishing attempts

Thursday, September 06, 2018

EHE OIT is working with university OCIO and Enterprise Security to make faculty, staff and students aware of a phishing campaign targeting your email inboxes.

This phishing campaign has targeted Ohio State, resulting in many students and some faculty and staff receiving numerous fraudulent, harmful messages. Enterprise Security and OCIO are working to address the problem.

What to look for

  • Messages sent as a "reply to" a message already in your inbox
  • No greeting
  • No signature
  • No explanation for why you are being sent a link (see screenshot)
  • A link that directs you to an unrecognized site, that does not end in "osu.edu" (see screenshot)

What you should do

To avoid being infected:

  • Be mindful of all email you receive
  • DO NOT click on suspicious links
  • Forward the message to report-phish@osu.edu
  • Be sure your anti-virus and software updates/patches are current

If you already clicked the link and think your computer may be infected:

  • Look for any strange activity on your device or email
  • Change your university password immediately
  • Contact the EHE IT Service Desk at 614-247-8324 (TECH) or submit a service request
  • Visit the Service Desk Help Center in 196 Arps Hall.
