Call for Proposals: 2021-22 Deans’ Emerging Scholars Seed Grant Program 

 

Overview: 

The College of Education and Human Ecology is committed to supporting the research efforts of its faculty. Seed grants provide faculty an opportunity to collect preliminary data supporting the development of a larger application to external funders. This mechanism also offers the opportunity for faculty to forge new collaborations across program areas; interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged. 

Research topics must be aligned with at least one of EHE’s pillars: Early Childhood Education, Urban/Rural Education, Health and Economic Vitality, STEAM, and International/Globalization. Special consideration will be given to those projects that specifically focus on underserved and under-represented groups. 

 

Application Process: 

Eligibility: This initiative is targeted towards assistant professors. Associate and full professors should partner with assistant professor faculty, serving as co-investigators on the research projects. 

Amount and Length of Award: Awards will be up to $15,000. Project timelines can range from 1-2 years. 

Deadline for Submissions: Applications are due Wednesday, March 31, 2021, by 5 p.m. Click here to submit your application. 

Funding Announcements: Awards will be announced by July 1, 2021. Projects must start by September 1, 2021. 

 

Application Format: 

Proposals should be single-spaced, 11 pt or larger font, and .5 inch margins on all sides. 

The title page of the application should contain the following: 

  1. Title of project 

  2. Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigators 

  3. Department and program area, titles and contact information of PI and Co-I’s 

The body of the application should include the following (page limitations noted below): 

  1. Specific Aims. Objectives and significance of project. (1 page) 

  2. Approach. Justification for the study, innovation, study design, and analysis plan. (3 pages) 

  3. Budget Proposal. Detailed budget proposal, including operating and personnel costs as well as narrative justification. Please note that recurring costs will not be funded. (2 pages) 

    1. Budget may cover academic year salary for the investigator, including course buy-out, and up to 1.0 summer month as well as funding for a GRA or other student position, research materials, participant payment, consultants, data acquisition, etc. For assistance in completing the budget, or to know what costs are allowable at Ohio State, please work with Michael Moses, grants development specialist for Human Sciences, or Ann Smith, grants development specialist for Educational Studies and Teaching and Learning. 

  4. Project Timeline. Timetable for planning and implementation. (up to 1 page) 

  5. Future plans. Describe the potential sources of external funding. (up to 1 page)

 

Selection Procedure: 

Proposals will be reviewed by a committee consisting of at least one faculty member from each department. Final decisions will be made by the Office of Research, Innovation and Collaboration (ORIC) and Dean Pope-Davis.

 

Selection Criteria: 

Applicants should not expect detailed written critiques of their proposal. However, a brief summary of strengths and limitations will be provided to all applicants. Proposals will be reviewed for: 

  • How well the project meets the goals of the Seed Grant Program, including the composition of the team of investigators. 

  • Alignment with EHE Pillars. 

  • Scientific or scholarly merit (e.g., significance, approach, novelty), and 

  • Likelihood of attracting outside funding. 

 

Project Completion: 

Seed grant funding is expected to lead to the submission of applications for external funding. A final report will be due to the Office of Research no later than three months after the seed grant funding has ended.
