Navigating Evidence-Based Interventions in Urban Schools: Practitioner Perspectives and Systemic Barriers

What happens when the gold standard of research doesn’t reflect the students in our classrooms? In this virtual Crane Research Forum, Dr. Scott Graves investigates the critical gap between official evidence-based interventions (EBIs) and the practical, cultural, and systemic realities of urban schools.

Dr. Graves will share foundational research highlighting significant representation gaps for Black youth in the evidence-based interventions literature. He will then bridge these findings with two recent qualitative studies that explore the Practitioner’s Dilemma: why psychologists often persist in implementing interventions that, while widely used, lack a formal EBI designation. Drawing on insights from practitioners in the field, this talk examines how systemic barriers and cultural mismatches influence how psychologists select the tools they use.
