The Buckeye Performance Annual Cycle is a year-long performance management cycle that guides how employees and managers set expectations, engage in ongoing conversations, support development and assess goals throughout the year. Performance planning is the Annual Cycle phase in which employees and their managers align on performance expectations and clearly define what is expected within their core duties, goals and objectives and values-based behavior. A Professional Development goal should also be included. Feedback are the focus of these performance conversations and are also captured in the Buckeye Performance Platform to support transparency and continuity.
Performance Planning - Employees and managers should collaborate to identify focus areas within three key elements of performance:
- Review Core Duties and role expectations. Identify aspects of job duties where you want to be more intentional, effective or consistent.
- Where do I want to strengthen how I perform my work?
- Set at least 3 annual Goals & Objectives (2 performance goals and 1 professional development goal) using the SMART goal framework.
- What will I accomplish this year in service to the mission and vision?
- What capability do I need to strengthen to perform my role well today?
- Identify shared Values and Behaviors the employee should demonstrate throughout the year. Demonstrate our Shared Values through specific, observable behaviors in how you work with others and approach your responsibilities.
- How will I show up in ways that reflect our values in my day-to-day work?
After performance planning conversations take place, enter in the Buckeye Performance Platform
- Core Duties: Add 1–3 key areas of focus in this section. Number each item (1, 2, 3) to clearly distinguish them.
- Goals & Objectives: Add two performance goals and one professional development goal in this section. Select “create” and “save” for each goal.
- Values: Add 1–3 behaviors that align with college/university values in this section. Number each behavior (1, 2, 3) to keep them clearly separated.
Completing Performance Planning early helps create clear expectations, align priorities, and support ongoing feedback throughout the year.
