Faculty information about summer 2020 internships

Friday, April 17, 2020

The College of Education and Human Ecology would like to thank you for your patience as we work with students to ensure they can be successful in completing their internship courses this summer. President Drake has sent an email to the university community outlining the move to online instruction and a one-week delay of summer term. With the community’s health and well-being, the number one priority, we are taking the following actions regarding summer internships and field placements.

Students and employers are encouraged to move their internship experience online if possible and are provided with guidelines for remote internships. If you have graduating seniors (any term in academic year 2020) who are required to complete an internship as part of their program of study who do not have an internship secured (cancelled, no remote options, etc.), the College of Education and Human Ecology recommends:

  • The student will register into your major internship course for the non-traditional option. This option will include assignments including case studies, mentorship, research, professional development and projects aligned with internship course assignments.
  • For the student to enroll into the major internship/field placement course:
    • The student will meet with the internship instructor for pre-approval for the non-traditional path.
    • Once you have pre-approved the student’s nontraditional experience, complete pre-approval documentation to give to the student. This documentation will take the place of the cover letter typically required for the online internship agreement. Students can complete the online student learning agreement at https://ehe.osu.edu/career-services/internship-credit. The student must upload this documentation in order to be approved and enrolled.

As in spring 2020 semester, if students are not able to meet the 180 required hour requirement during the summer internship, please offer additional/supplemental assignments to make up the hours with the following assignment options, based on your recommendations:

  • Research your industry, employer, entry level positions or hot topics in your industry; for example, how the COVID-19 virus is impacting your industry.
  • Develop a business plan.
  • Network with professionals in the field through phone interviews or email questions to gather more information on the field and career paths.
  • Complete an online portfolio of your experiences in your internship and how they relate to your course work.
  • Complete projects/papers on career paths, companies, marketing/social media and related topics.
  • All topics and assignments will need to be approved by the instructor. Instructors will have the final decision on additional assignments.
