Faculty, staff awards announced at convocation

Six faculty and staff were recognized for their outstanding contributions that help the college achieve its mission, vision and goals. The awards were presented at EHE’s College Convocation August 19.

The dean and executive council selected awardees based on nominations from faculty and staff. The following winners of the 2019 Faculty and Staff Awards will receive a $1,000 award and a certificate of acknowledgement:

Maura Eze (Teaching and Learning)
Distinguished Staff Leadership Award
Honors exceptional staff who motivate others by mentoring or coaching, providing excellent service and creating an environment that reflects EHE’s mission, vision and goals.

Ruth Lowery (Teaching and Learning)
Distinguished Research Award
Honors individuals who advance the field through transforming and integrating knowledge, facilitating learning, solving compelling problems, contributing to public policy, evaluating practices and programs or interpreting knowledge for relevant audiences

Ari Toles (Academic Affairs)
The Rudine S. Bishop Diversity Enhancement Award
The Rudine S. Bishop award is named for the emeritus EHE professor who has done award-winning work on African-American children’s literature. The award honors faculty or staff who have demonstrated a commitment to breaking down barriers and diversifying the college.

Darlene Velez (Human Sciences)
Distinguished Staff Award
Honors outstanding EHE staff who create an environment that fosters respect, integrity, fairness and professionalism.

Tiffany Wild (Teaching and Learning)
Distinguished Faculty Service Award
Honors individuals who make extensive contributions to furthering EHE’s mission. Their contributions allow faculty, staff and students to focus positively on achieving excellence.

Shirley Yu (Educational Studies)
Distinguished Teaching Award
This award honors a faculty member for excellent teaching that encourages inquiry, reflection and innovation. Recipients value multiple perspectives and infuse technology while encouraging scholarship and collaboration.

Faculty earn tenure, promoted to full professor

Dean Don Pope-Davis also recognized newly tenured faculty and faculty promoted to full professor.

The faculty who received tenure are:

Aina Appova, associate professor of mathematics education (Teaching and Learning, Marion)
Matthew Brock, associate professor of special education (Educational Studies)
Tonya Orchard, associate professor of human nutrition (Human Sciences)
Timothy San Pedro, associate professor of multicultural and equity studies (Teaching and Learning)
Francis Troyan, associate professor of foreign, secondary and multilingual language education (Teaching and Learning)

The faculty who advanced full professor are:

Karen Irving, professor of mathematics education (Teaching and Learning)
Weidong Li, professor of kinesiology (Human Sciences)
Anne-Marie Nunez, professor of higher education and student affairs (Educational Studies)
