Finding solutions for international students

Friday, July 10, 2020

This message was sent to EHE international students on July 10.

Dear international students:

We are reaching out to you today because we recognize that in addition to the challenges related to the recent COVID pandemic and xenophobia, the new regulations put forth by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on July 6 targeting international students have created confusion, fear, anxiety and anger for you.

The new guidelines indicate that international students who are in the United States will not be permitted to take all their coursework online – a drastic change from previous accommodations made due to COVID-19. These sudden changes create an untenable situation. We acknowledge that these new regulations feel unfair and potentially put you in a challenging position, having to choose between your academic career and your well-being.

We want you to know that Ohio State cares deeply about your health and your academic career. You bring richness to our community and enhance our college. We value the perspectives, knowledge and experience that you share with us.

We know that the current situation is difficult and fluid. Our leadership, faculty and staff will work closely with central administration to advocate for a solution that ensures that you can successfully complete your academic work.

In the meantime, at the university level, we urge you to seek guidance from the Office of International Affairs. The staff can be reached at: iss@osu.edu. A link to their frequently asked questions is here. This includes separate frequently asked questions for current and new international students. Additionally International Affairs is hosting virtual information sessions for students to answer questions.

We also encourage you to connect with your advisors and review information provided by academic advising on identifying courses that will allow you to continue your academic career here at Ohio State. We recommend waiting until after July 27 to make these changes to your schedule as there are still ongoing updates to course delivery.

We recognize that this is a very difficult time for you and your families. Please know that we will do our best to accommodate your choices. We look forward to having you here with us this autumn.

Sincerely,

Don Pope-Davis, PhD

Dean
