PhD candidate issues due to COVID-19

Monday, March 30, 2020

Issue 1:

There are a number of doctoral candidates who are/were planning to graduate either this semester or next. Some have had disruptions in the process. In the case of those candidates who had to discontinue data collection or manage other kinds of disruptions, the EHE college administration recommendations are these:

  1. Candidates use the data they were able to collect, make note of the disruption in the dissertation, and report on the data they are able to analyze.
  2. Faculty committee members may advise candidates on their perspective, but the college highly recommends flexibility to follow candidate choice.
  3. For those with minimal to no disruption, plan to schedule dissertation defenses virtually (add the date by when this needs to occur). (Approved already by the Graduate School)

Issue 2:

There are some doctoral candidates, with such a level of disruption that they now require more time to conduct their dissertations, that the EHE college administration recommendations are these:

  1. Candidates in this situation, must self-identify no later than May 1 to Amanda Crall.
  2. Candidates must notify their Dissertation Committee by May 1.
  3. Departments and the College of Education and Human Ecology will work together to make arrangements for these candidates to have a dissertation fellowship appointment for autumn 2020 and/or spring 2021, as needed.
