Teaching Principles and Expenditure Controls Moving Forward

Thursday, July 30, 2020

The following message was sent to faculty and staff June 17, 2020.

Dear EHE faculty and staff,

As we respond to the global pandemic, we continue to advance our mission devoted to education, economic vitality, health and well-being. At the same time, we must conserve our financial resources. Doing so will take a strong, collective effort. We each have a role.

Our plan is to undertake two approaches to address our fiscal challenges. Our values and pillars will be our guideposts as we move forward together into the next academic year.

EHE expenditure controls

We have developed principles to achieve our goal of reducing costs while supporting our students to continue to have an immense positive impact on the world. We also face the need to curtail spending such as business travel and nonessential supplies and services.

These budgetary principles are rooted in our values of equity and fairness and in the belief that our community will rise to the challenge before us.

EHE principles to guide teaching processes

Our students are the life blood of our college, providing well over 90% of our revenue. In conferring with our department chairs, we have developed an array of strategies to achieve savings in ways aligned with our values.

I have asked each department to realize a 10% cut in the pool supporting graduate teaching associates and lecturers, but to do so in a way that minimizes the impact on current GTAs and full-time lecturers. We aim to continue employing these valued students and faculty who have committed to us.

At the same time, I ask our full-time clinical, lecturing and tenure-track faculty to teach their full loads, and to adjust courses to reduce costs while advancing the student experience. I believe the full engagement of our full-time faculty will have an appreciable, positive impact on our students.

Departments will be empowered to develop and enact strategies to achieve these ends. We need your creativity and ingenuity to advance student learning while reducing costs.
